Bring
Your medical history and intake form. You can find the intake form here. If you can’t fill out the intake form ahead of time, please plan on arriving 15-20 minutes prior to your appointment in order to fill out your paperwork.
Wear
Comfortable, loose clothing that you can roll up above the knees and elbows. You may also need to expose your abdomen, so avoid wearing one piece clothing, if possible.
Eat/Drink
It is helpful to eat something light before acupuncture and make sure you drink water before and after. It is best to avoid coffee and other forms of caffeine the day of your appointment but especially right before your appointment.
Questions / Answers
Your practitioner will ask you a variety of questions that may not seem directly related to your complaint. This is because Traditional Chinese medicine looks at the whole, dynamic body to determine how different organ and energy systems are working together. In this way, they can discover the root of the problem, rather than just treat the symptom. Feel free to ask questions at any time. Your practitioner will not be able to explain all of Chinese medical theory to you, but will give you information about the process. At the end of the treatment, they will share their findings about your condition, give insight about your constitutional health, and suggest a custom treatment plan going forward.
Diagnosis / Treatment
Chinese medicine uses many methods of diagnosis including looking at your tongue, reading your pulse and palpating the abdomen and acupuncture points. In addition to acupuncture, your practitioner may use other modalities to bring you to vibrant health including moxibustion, gua aha, cupping, and creating custom herbal medicine formulas which are formulated specifically to your unique constitution and condition. Food is viewed as medicine and specific food choices or diets may also be recommended.
Be Aware
Most people find acupuncture to be relaxing and some people fall asleep during treatment. Acupuncture needles are as fine as a strand of hair. You may not feel them at all, or you may feel a moment of tenderness as they are applied, a zing or twinge, or a feeling of warmth or expansion. Many people report a feeling of well-being. Acupuncture makes changes in the body subtly. This is a good time for you to tune out the world and tune in to yourself.
